An Epic Adventure Photography Assignment in South Africa
Juliet from the JL Creative team travelled to South Africa to photograph an extraordinary off-road motorbike expedition with Wavolt Adventures.
The tour, known as the Cederberg Explorer Skaapkop Tour, is a multi-day adventure through some of the most remote and visually striking terrain in the south-west of the country.
It is not a gentle ride.
It is a full-throttle journey across mountains, desert plains and rugged landscapes that demand both skill and resilience.
From a photography perspective, it is the dream brief.
Setting Off from Cape Town
The journey began just outside Cape Town, with riders gathering at dawn on the edge of the city.
There is always something special about that early morning energy before an adventure begins.
Engines quietly rumbling, riders adjusting their gear, a shared excitement building in the cool morning air.
Before long, a full squadron of 23 riders had assembled, along with a support crew prepared for every eventuality.
As the briefing wrapped up and helmets went on, the group set off, leaving the city behind.
In the rear-view mirror, the iconic Table Mountain slowly faded into the distance.
And just like that, the adventure began.
Into the Wild: The Cederberg Mountains
Very quickly, the smooth tarred roads gave way to dirt tracks, then gravel, then rugged mountain passes.
The Cederberg Mountains are wild, remote and breathtakingly beautiful.
This is a landscape that feels vast and untouched.
Rock formations rise dramatically from the earth. Endless horizons stretch in every direction. The terrain shifts constantly, keeping both riders and photographer fully engaged.
There is a rawness to it that is incredibly inspiring.
As the ride unfolded deeper into the mountains, the sense of isolation grew stronger. There were long stretches where it felt like we were the only people in the world, moving through a landscape that has remained unchanged for centuries.
That feeling of remoteness adds something really special to both the experience and the photography. It strips everything back to the essentials. Light, movement, environment.
Riding Through the Tankwa Karoo
As the journey continued, the terrain opened out into the wide, arid expanses of the Tankwa Karoo.
This part of South Africa has a completely different energy.
Dry, vast and almost otherworldly, it feels like stepping onto another planet.
It is also the setting for AfrikaBurn, a creative and expressive gathering that Juliet has experienced previously.
Passing through this landscape brought back vivid memories of that time.
AfrikaBurn is a celebration of art, freedom and human connection, set within this same dramatic desert environment. Huge art installations rise from the ground, communities form temporarily and then disappear again, leaving no trace behind.
Returning to the Tankwa Karoo in this completely different context, this time with motorbikes carving through the dust instead of art installations rising from it, was incredibly special.
It is one of those landscapes that imprints itself on you.
Speed, Skill and Precision
Watching the riders navigate this terrain was nothing short of incredible.
There is a rhythm and flow to it that is fascinating to observe.
The bikes powered through deep sand, climbed rocky escarpments and crossed riverbeds with precision and control.
From a photography perspective, this created a constant stream of opportunities.
Every rise in the terrain revealed a new angle. Every turn in the track offered a different composition.
There were moments where riders would crest a hill and appear against the sky, creating striking silhouettes. Other times, they would disappear into clouds of dust, only to emerge seconds later with power and speed.
It was dynamic, unpredictable and endlessly exciting to capture.

Photographing an expedition like this requires complete immersion.
There is no pause button.
Everything is happening in real time, and you have to be ready.
The riders are moving quickly. The light is changing constantly. The environment is unpredictable.

The African night sky stretched endlessly above, filled with stars.
There was music, laughter and the unmistakable atmosphere of a proper South African braai.
It was wild, joyful and completely immersive.
Photographing in that environment brought a different kind of creativity.
Working with low light, warm tones and fast-moving moments required a more instinctive approach.
But the results were rich, atmospheric and full of life.
