Arrival in Jaipur: A Royal Welcome
Touching down in Jaipur, often referred to as the Pink City, we were immediately immersed in a world of colour, culture and regal heritage.
Our welcome was nothing short of spectacular.
A traditional maharajah-style greeting set the tone, with vibrant textiles, warm hospitality and a sense of ceremony that felt both grand and deeply authentic.
Jaipur is a city that feels alive with history.
Its architecture, its people and its atmosphere create a rich visual tapestry that is endlessly inspiring to photograph.
The Colour, Texture and Rhythm of India
India is a photographer’s playground in the truest sense.
Everywhere you look, there is colour. Not just in the obvious places like textiles and architecture, but in the small, fleeting details. The vibrancy of a sari moving through a market, the contrast of painted doorways against sun-warmed stone, the intricate patterns woven into everyday life.
Light behaves differently here too.
It feels soft and golden in the early morning, wrapping everything in warmth. By midday it becomes bold and bright, creating strong contrast and shadows. And then, as evening approaches, it softens once more into something calm and atmospheric.
As a photographer, it keeps you completely present.
Every scene is different. Every moment offers something new.
The Anticipation of Ranthambore
While Jaipur captivated us culturally, the heart of this chapter lay in the wilderness.
Our sights were firmly set on Ranthambore National Park, one of the most renowned places in the world to see wild tigers.
Spanning around 250 square miles, Ranthambore was once the private hunting ground of the maharajahs of Jaipur. Today, it stands as one of the most important sanctuaries for the preservation of the Bengal tiger.
The anticipation was palpable.
Tiger sightings are never guaranteed.
And that is exactly what makes them so special.
The Moment: Seeing Tigers in the Wild
Then came the moment.
Not one, but two Bengal tigers.
To witness a tiger in the wild is something that is difficult to put into words.
There is a presence. A quiet power. A sense of command over the landscape.
They move with such grace and intention, every step measured, every glance purposeful.
For a photographer, everything sharpens.
You are completely focused, anticipating movement, reading behaviour, framing the shot while still absorbing the experience.
Knowing how rare these animals are only deepens the impact.
To see them here, in their natural habitat, felt incredibly special.
Reading the Jungle: The Build-Up to a Sighting
What makes a tiger sighting so exhilarating is not just the moment itself, but everything that leads up to it.
The stillness.
The quiet communication between guides.
The subtle cues in the environment.
A rustle in the grass. A distant call. The shift in behaviour of other animals.
There is a language to the jungle, and the expert trackers understand it instinctively.

And then, something even more unexpected.

We were driving through the park when the atmosphere shifted. Alarm calls echoed across the landscape from peacocks, monkeys and other animals.
A predator was near.
Following their gaze across a rocky escarpment, we waited.
And then we saw it.
An Indian leopard moving with quiet confidence before disappearing into the thicket.
A fleeting moment, but one that left a huge impact.

You lower your camera slightly.
You look around.
And there is this shared understanding that you have just witnessed something rare.

Beyond the big cats, Ranthambore was alive with wildlife.
Wild boar, deer, antelope, sloth bears and crocodiles all revealed themselves throughout the drives.

Bright flashes of colour in flight. Elegant movement through the trees. The constant presence of life in the air.
It was a reminder that the magic of safari lies in the entire ecosystem, not just one species.

Some of the most rewarding images came from the quieter encounters.
A deer standing perfectly in soft light.

The texture of the landscape, reflections in still water, the layering of trees and ruins.

Beyond the wildlife, we explored local villages and markets, immersed in everyday life and culture.

And then there were the people.
The local guides and trackers whose knowledge brought the jungle to life.
The warmth and hospitality we experienced everywhere we went.

Set in a mango orchard, lit by lanterns and scented with blossoms, dinner was served in a torchlit amphitheatre.
It was intimate, atmospheric and incredibly beautiful.
